It’s the first Madrid derby of 2015 and all eyes will be on Fernando Torres as he returns to Atletico Madrid on loan to take on Real.
Atletico will be riding hire on Fernando fever as the star striker’s return has reenergised the club ahead of the Copa del Rey clash against rivals Real Madrid.
It has been several years, however, since Torres was performing at his peak and although it’s hoped that returning to his old club will roll back the years on the quality of his football. Typically it would be Mario Mandzukic starting with Torres on the bench, but with the Croatian striker rested for the clash it could be Torres’ chance to show that ‘The Kid’ still has it.
Atletico have been outclassing Real Madrid this season, beating them in both the Spanish Super Cup and in the league. Boss Diego Simeone is smart to throw Torres straight into the starting line up as the momentum around his arrival should spur the whole team on.
“Torres had be training in Milan,” Simeone told a press conference on Tuesday. “If I didn’t think he was strong or had the ability to break down opposition defences I wouldn’t be counting on him.
“He has different characteristics to what we have in the group and he will strengthen our attack.”
Ideally the return of Torres will make up for some of the flair that Atletico has been missing since Diego Costa moved to Chelsea in the summer.
In eight meetings since Carlo Ancelotti took over as boss at Real, his men have only beaten Atletico three times. His front three will remain as Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo, despite some criticism of Bale after Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Valencia when he missed an opportunity.
Before Sunday, Real Madrid were on a run of 22 consecutive wins so Ancelotti’s men will be keen to return to their winning ways at the Vincente Calderon Stadium on Wednesday. Sergio Ramos may be unfit for play so Pepe and Raphael Varane will face the pressures of holding off Torres.
Has ‘The Kid’ returned as Atletico’s saviour against rivals Real Madrid, or is the 30-year-old now past his peak?
