Lionel Messi will be the one to watch in Saturday’s epic showdown between Barcelona and Juventus in the Champions League Final in Berlin.
Barcelona and Juventus meet on Saturday in the final of European football’s top tier competition to square off for the title. Both sides are already double champions in their respective domestic competitions this year, with Barcelona winning La Liga and Copa del Rey and Juventus topping Serie A for the fourth year in a row and taking the Coppa Italia for the first time in two decades.
Much discussion ahead of the clash in Berlin and indeed throughout the Champions League has focused on Barcelona’s impressive attacking line-up, featuring Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez. The trio of attacking prowess have scored 120 goals between them across all competitions this season, which is certainly no mean feat.
Messi has proven himself one of the most exciting players to watch this season, netting 43 goals in La Lifa (second only to Cristiano Ronaldo’s 48) and recording 18 assists. Juventus will need to have a solid strategy in place to stop the Argentine if they’re to be in with a chance of winning the record-breaking triple on Saturday.
Juventus will need to be smart. Setting one man to simply follow Messi around will just create more opportunities for Suarez, Neymar and Andres Iniesta.
Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri has himself admitted the difficulties in man-marking the Argentine, commenting, “We have to be ready, we have to be good. We know Messi’s skills, but we can’t forget the likes of Neymar, Suarez and Iniesta also.
“Man-marking Messi is almost impossible. We have to be good at working well around him. I think beyond stopping Messi they have Neymar and Suarez – players with technical skills so we have to be brave.
“It’s a Champions League final – it’s normal to face the best players in the world, but we’re not afraid of facing Barcelona.
“It’s been an extraordinary season that will go down in history and winning the Champions League would make it even better.”
The Juventus boss added, “We need to stay compact and keep it tight. They possess great quality, but so do we. We will prepare for every eventuality, including penalties, but I don’t think it will go to spot-kicks.”
Juve’s impressive semi-final victory over last season’s champions Real Madrid saw them defy critics to take up their place in the final opposite Barca.
The key to victory for Juventus will be in their counter attacks. If they can deny space and stay tight in defence they may overcome the threat posed by Messi, but it will be the speed with which they act when they get the ball that will define the game.
Let it not be forgotten that this Bianconeri side also have their own formidable players, most notably Carlos Tevez and Albaro Morata. However, with two defensively solid teams facing off on Saturday the outcome could come down to simple numbers. Juventus will be fielding two game-changers, while Barcelona are out to prove, yet again, that three really is the magic number.
