Two giants of European football go head-to-head on Tuesday when Bayern Munich meet Inter Milan in Shanghai for a pre-season friendly fixture.

Pep Guardiola’s side began their preparations for the upcoming campaign with an impressive 4-1 win over Valencia in Beijing at the weekend and the German giants will be keen to continue in that form when they come up against Roberto Mancini’s men.

Bayern have claimed four Bundesliga titles, three DFB Pokal Cups and three Champions League final spots since 2010. Guardiola has strengthened his squad ahead of the new season with the acquisition of Brazil forward Douglas Costa from Shakhtar Donetsk as well as midfielder Joshua Kimmich and goalkeeper Sven Ulrich from Stuttgart.

The German champions have also confirmed the arrival of Chilean midfielder Arturo Vidal from Juventus for a fee of €30m, a signing which goes some way towards salving the blow of Bastian Schweinsteiger’s departure to Manchester United.

Despite only being a friendly match, this clash is shaping up to be an interesting one with Guardiola continuing his hybrid 3-1-4-2 formation that employs just one natural centre back.

Inter have managed to win 2 and draw 1 of their previous 5 against Bayern. They also beat the Bundesliga side in the 2010 Champions League final and Guardiola knows that Tuesday’s match won’t be easy.

“Inter are one of the biggest clubs in Europe,” he said, ahead of the game. “It will be a tough test.”

Munich are still without injured duo Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery but, even without the world class pair, Bayern ran out comfortable and impressive winners at the weekend.

Meanwhile, Inter struggled to an eighth place finish in Serie A last term. They have, however, beaten the Stuttgart Kickers and Carpi in pre-season.

Roberto Mancini has strengthened his squad with the additions of Monaco midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia, Atletico Madrid centre-back Miranda, Colombian defender Jeison Murillo and Barcelona right-back Martin Montoya (on loan) ahead of the coming campaign. He has, however, admitted that Bayern are the stronger side going into the game.

“Right now Bayern Munich are ahead of us in terms of physical condition because they started their season three weeks ago. For us, the most important thing is to play at a high level in order to improve quickly,” said Mancini.
