Liverpool travel to Turkey on Thursday to play the second leg of their Europa League last 32 tie against Besiktas.
The first meeting of these two sides took place last week and saw Liverpool walk out victors for the first time in six European games. The Reds had previously failed to make an impact in the Champions League and were unable to qualify from group stages, finding themselves instead relegated to the Europa League.
The clash at Anfield last Thursday saw Brendan Rodgers’ men take a narrow lead over Besiktas when Mario Balotelli scored from the spot in the 85th minute.
The penalty was awarded to Liverpool after Jordon Ibe was fouled by Ramon Motta and led to a row between Jordon Henderson and Balotelli over who should step up and take the kick. The Italian national snatched the ball and confidently took the penalty, finding the net to the relief of Liverpool fans everywhere.
The closest Besiktas came to finding the net was an on-target attempt by Demba Ba, however the former Chelsea player delivered the ball right into the hands of Reds keeper Simon Mignolet.
Liverpool are clearly a dominant side at the moment, with just one loss since mid-December, but Besiktas proved themselves worthy opponents.
Slaven Bilic’s men may be heading into the second leg with increasing problems, however. The Besiktas boss blamed fatigued for his side’s shock 1-0 defeat to Eskishirspor at the weekend, a result which saw them lose their spot at the top of the Turkish Super League.
Bilic is also faced with a small selection crisis too, with Motta and Ersan Gulum suspended after their bookings at Anfield last week and first choice keeper Tolga Zengin missing out due to a knee problem.
“We expected that [Turkish Super League defeat] after playing a tough game at Liverpool,” said Bilic after the weekend’s disappointment.
“One may criticise the coach for the loss, but the player rotation is not why we lost.”
Besiktas have slashed ticket prices for home fans in an attempt to get a boost from the sound of a supportive home crowd.
“We need our fans to fill the Ataturk Olympic Stadium if we are to beat Liverpool in the return leg,” Bilic said.
