Besiktas vs Tottenham | Thursday 11 December, 2014 | Atatürk Olympic Stadium | 18.00
Besiktas and Tottenham battle it out for the top position in Europa League Group C on Thursday at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium.
Both teams have already qualified for the next stage of the competition but the first place position in the group could be decided by the outcome of this game.
Tottenham currently have a two point advantage at the top of the group so a win or a draw will be sufficient to remain on top. Besiktas will need a win if they’re to end the group stage ahead of Spurs.
Demba Ba scored the a late equaliser for Besiktas their last time out but the in-form striker may be watching Thursday’s game from the sidelines due to a toe injury. Slaven Bilic’s side will also be without Atiba Hutchinson as he serves a suspension.
Mauricio Pochettino will be pleased to see Federico Fazio return from his own suspension but Spurs’ defence remains thin due to injuries for Vlad Chiriches and Kyle Naughton. Kyle Walker could find himself returning to Spurs’ first team in place of Naughton after a long break due to several fitness issues.
Pochettino has used the Europa League to play some of his less experienced players and is likely to do so again, partly to save his first team what he considers poor scheduling by the Premier League in relation to the European contest.
“We do not feel the Premier League helps us,” he said this week. “When we play Thursday in Istanbul, we will arrive home very late and then have a trip to Swansea. It is very difficult to prepare with one less recovery day.
“If we had one more day, maybe if we played on the Monday, then it would help and it would help the football as well.
“It would help us put on more of a spectacle, more of a show. The best period for the recovery of a player is after a Champions League game. It is in the opposite way after the Europa League and it is difficult to manage.”
Tottenham’s domestic form has been far less impressive than their performance in Europe, culminating in a goalless home draw to Crystal Palace last time out.
Besiktas contrastingly sit at the top of the Turkish Super Lig ahead of Galatasaray and the defending title holders Fenerbahce, but will have their work cut out for them against Tottenham on Thursday.
