Betting: Bayern Munich vs CityJake Cooper | 12 Oct 2016
Manchester City open their Champions League campaign tonight against Group E’s most formidable opponent Bayern Munich, but can they repeat the success of their last trip to the Allianz Arena? Take a look at my betting tips and make sure you’re backing the best team.
The Premier League champions have been paired against the Bundesliga title holders in what is set to be this week’s most exciting match.
City captain Vincent Kompany believes the team have nothing to prove as they head back to Barvaria tonight. “We’re confident,” the defender told the press this week. “This is the first game of the Champions League, an away game against one of the hardest teams to play against in the world right now. But we should take confidence out of the last game we played in Munich.
“We’re up for the challenge anyway. I don’t think we’ve got a point to prove in Europe. I dissociate Europe from the league. But I just want to win games.”
Kompany in fact was out with an injury the last time these two teams met and City will again be without a key defender as Pablo Zabaleta is excluded after receiving a red card at Camp Nou in March.
With Bacary Sagna ready to step up in defence, Manuel Pellegrini will also be welcoming back Yaya Toure tonight after the midfielder was forced to sit out Saturday’s draw at Arsenal.
Toure will now be well rested which could be crucial in capitalising on Pep Guardiola’s current deficits in the midfield area.
The Bayern boss will have a tough challenge with central players Bastian Schweinsteiger, Thiago Alcantara and Javi Martinez all side-lined from knee injuries.
Former Liverpool and Real Madrid player Xabi Alonso will need to bear a lot of the burden in midfield but his impressive performance in Saturday’s 2-0 Bundesliga win over Stuttgart suggests he’s up to the challenge.
Bayern might face further difficulty with question marks remaining as to whether daunting duo Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben will be fit enough to play.
Neither squad is on top form right now but I’ll be betting on Bayern in this game. Man City are too unpredictable right now and the Germans, playing at home, will be looking to take revenge on the Premier League team for their defeat last season.

SkyBet have Bayern Munich priced at 4/6 to win but, for a better return, I’ll be betting on Bayern to win with Thomas Muller to score, priced at 2/1. A £10 bet at SkyBet will pay out a pretty decent £30.
