Champions League: Sporting Lisbon v Chelsea

Jake Cooper | 12 Oct 2016

Premier League table-toppers Chelsea travel to Sporting on Tuesday for their second Champions League Group G clash. We’ll be betting on Jose Mourinho’s side who have yet to be beaten this season. Check out our game preview and betting tips below and make the most of what promises to be an entertaining game.

Despite already standing 3 points clear at the top of the Premier League, Chelsea won’t find Sporting an easy opponent and the Champions League is a different proposition all together. The Portuguese team are themselves defending an unbeaten record having not lost a game in the last 16 European matches they have played at home. They have also only lost once in their last nine games against English sides.

Chelsea, who won the Champions League in 2012, played their first game of this year’s group stages at home to Schalke. Although they sailed comfortably through the first half with a 1-0 lead thanks to Cesc Fabregas’ early goal, Klaa-Jan Huntelaar scored on 62 minutes, leaving Chelsea unable to regain their lead.

Mourinho’s men will be approaching Tuesday’s game in high spirits having beaten Aston Villa 3-0 at the weekend. Diego Costa scored his eighth goal for Chelsea since his move from Atletico Madrid this summer despite not currently operating at full fitness.

With Costa unlikely to play the full 90 minutes against Schalke, Loic Remy might well be a suitable stand in and is likely to start against Sporting.

Sporting were also unable to win their first group game of the Champions League. Although Nani, on loan to Sporting from Manchester United, put the side ahead with just 10 minutes remaining on the clock against Maribor, an injury-time goal from Luka Zahovic evened the score.

Both sides will be pushing for goals to secure the full three points from this clash as neither will want a repeat of the draws in their first Group G games.
