Chelsea impressed with a 6-3 win in the reverse fixture at Goodison Park but with their top scorer still suspended can they pull another stunner when they host Everton on Wednesday?
The Blues have held onto a comfortable lead at the top of the table. Another win against a stuttering Everton side on Wednesday will see them maintain a seven point gap over Man City, who are likely to pick up three points of their own against Stoke.
Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic isn’t expecting such a big scoreline as when the two sides last met at Goodison Park, particularly as Diego Costa, who scored two of the Blue’s 6 goals, is serving a match ban.
Matic told the club’s official website, “Now, at home, we have to win. We know that it is also going to be difficult but, if we want to be champions, we have to win. Everton is not the kind of team to concede six.
“They did against us but not again so we just want to win; it doesn’t matter if it is with six goals or 1-0, we just need three points.”
Everton are in 12th position in the league after a 0-0 Merseyside derby at the weekend and will be hoping to cause an upset when they visit Chelsea on Wednesday. A win for the Toffees at Stamford Bridge would be their first in over two decades but Roberto Martinez’ are preparing for a tough fight.
Romelu Lukaku will be looking to make an impact against his former side as he returns to Stamford Bridge for the first time since last July.
Martinez will be keen to see Leighton Baines return after he missed the weekend’s derby due to a knee problem. Aiden McGeady is confirmed to be absent due to an injury incurred in training while Steven Pienaar (knee), Tim Howard (calf) and Leon Osman (foot) all remain on the sidelines.
Cesc Fabregas is due to return for Chelsea after having missed out on the last two fixtures with a hamstring problem, while Filipe Luis remains a doubt.
