Chelsea’s star striker Diego Costa will be hoping to return to top form at home this weekend against Hull City.

Chelsea remain top of the Premier League but their winning margin has shrunk to just three points after losing to Newcastle last weekend.

Diego Costa has been plagued with injuries for several weeks, playing only for short spurts to help his recovery, but he returned to face Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League this week for the full 90 minutes, although he remained unable to find the net.

Manager Jose Mourinho believes that the Spanish striker has benefited from a full game on Wednesday and can continue to add to his impressive start to the season this weekend against Hull City.

“He wants to improve his condition,” the Chelsea boss explained. “The confidence is not high, the condition is not the best but he wants to use the game against Sporting to chase lots of runs and movements, always wanting the ball, always wanting to associate with the wingers and with Cesc Fabregas.

“It is very important for him. I saw him better than against Newcastle, better than against Sunderland. The game was important for him.”

Chelsea will be pushing for the win on Saturday to restore confidence after Newcastle broke their unbeaten season last weekend. Another defeat for the Blues could see Man City draw level with them at the top of the table if they find victory against Leicester City on Saturday.

Hull City head to Stamford Bridge in very low spirits after they dropped into the relegation zone with a 0-0 draw against West Brom last time out.

Steve Bruce’s side could be boosted by the return of captain Curtis Davies who’s watched the last to matches from the bench as well as Nekica Jelavic whose recent fitness has been hampered by illness. Gaston Ramirez however remains suspended after being sent off against Tottenham in November.

Mourinho chose to rest many of his first team players against Sporting as Chelsea had already secured the top spot in their Champions League group, but John Terry, Eden Hazard, Branislav Ivanovic and Willian all look set to make a return against Hull.
