Chelsea will be looking for revenge when they host Newcastle after the Magpies were the team to end their 23 game unbeaten streak at the start of December.
The Blues began the New Year with their second demoralising defeat of the season, a 5-3 loss to London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, and now lead top the table only by virtue of alphabetical order. Manchester City have risen after a slow start to the season and are now equal on points, goal difference and goals scored to Chelsea.
Chelsea’s visit to St James’ Park in December resulted in a 2-1 loss thanks to a brace from Papiss Cisse. Didier Drogba was able to pull one back for Chelsea seven minutes from the whistle but it was too little too late for the visitors.
Newcastle will be taking on Chelsea without Alan Pardew, who left the club for Crystal Palace just last week. The Magpies are in the care of John Carver in the meantime while some reports suggest that a permanent boss will be hard to find as Mike Ashley is allegedly preparing to sell the club.
Since Pardew’s departure Newcastle has failed to find their winning flair, drawing 3-3 at home to Burnley before losing 1-0 to Leicester in their FA Cup Third Round draw.
With both teams looking for their first League win of the year this will be a hard fought game, but Chelsea’s FA Cup victory against Watford should have given them a slight confidence boost.
The Blues are yet to lose a game at home this season and with players like Diego Costa and Eden Hazard on top form at the moment they should have no trouble in overcoming Newcastle at Stamford Bridge.
Newcastle will be without Papisse Cisse who helped his side to victory in the last clash as he is serving a three match ban. Instead the pressure will be on Ayoze Perez and Emmanuel Riviere who’ve so far been unconvincing this season.
