Chelsea host Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday for the second leg of their Champions League last 16 clash.
The Blues are hoping that this season will see them reach the final for the fourth time in just six years, while their opponents have had less success in European competitions.
Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic scored a critical away goal in Paris in the first leg of this tie, but an equaliser from Edinson Cavani meant that Jose Mourinho’s men were unable to walk out with the victory they were hoping for.
Mourinho will be pleased to welcome back Nemaja Matic who has been unavailable due to a ban for a high challenge in the Burnley game in February. The Chelsea boss will be looking to use Matic as extra cover for Eden Hazard, who was fouled a total of nine times in the Paris clash.
He said of the Belgian midfielder, “If Hazard were another player he’d dive, stay on the floor, roll in the grass, scream. He’d ask for cards and cards and cards.
“This kid is pure. There were nine fouls. In the Premier League it’s no different. For example at Stoke, which was an unbelievable situation, and this is what happened game after game.”
When pushed on how best to protect Hazard, Mourinho simply insisted that if players and officials played by the book then these things wouldn’t be such a problem. “Give cards to the opponents,” he said. “Follow the rules of the game. It’s as simple as that.”
The second leg will see former Chelsea player David Luiz return to Stamford Bridge for the first time since he left for PSG last summer. Teammate Thiago Silva has warned Chelsea that Luiz can’t wait to go back to the Bridge and knock his former side out of the Champions League.
“David is very excited to go back to Chelsea,” the Brazilian defender said this week. “He had great memories there, he helped them to win the Champions League.
“He is a winner though. His only objective will be to knock them out and for us to progress. If it was not for an unbelievable performance from Thibaut Courtois we would have won the game and would be travelling to London with the lead.”
Luiz added of his former team, “They are having a great season, defend well and have great players but above all I know my team. We will try to score there and play like we know how.
“We will have a good game plan and implement it the best way possible to achieve a great performance.”
