Chelsea will be looking to redeem themselves against Sporting Lisbon after their unbeaten season was broken by Newcastle at the weekend.
The Premier League leaders were handed their first taste of defeat on Saturday with a 2-1 loss reducing their lead at the top of the table to just three points.
The club remain impressive in Europe, however, with their position at the top of Group G confirmed ahead of their clash against Sporting on Wednesday night.
Before last Saturday the last time Jose Mourinho’s men lost in any competition was in the semi-final of last year’s Champions League when Atletico Madrid walked out 3-1 victors at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea keeper Thibaut Courtois is not concerned about the mood in the Chelsea camp after their loss at St James’ Park.
“Obviously we are disappointed but we have to take the positives,” he said. “We are still top of the league and we’ve had a great start to the season.
“Okay, this was our first defeat but we have to keep working hard and things will go better for us again. We are confident that if we work hard in training and learn from our mistakes we will win again.”
With the pressure off for Chelsea, Mourinho will be looking to rest some of his first-choice players like John Terry and Diego Costa.
“He has to improve his condition,” Mourinho said of Costa. “He was injured and had many doubts because he went a long time without training.
“Obviously that must have an effect on a player in the way he runs, the way he moves and in his coordination. I don’t think there is any problem but he has to recover.”
The game is far more critical for Sporting who need a victory to guarantee their progression to the next stage, although a draw could suffice depending on the outcome of the clash between Schalke and Maribor.
Sporting’s main concerns are over on-loan winger Nani who picked up an injury on Friday at Boavista, making him a doubt for Wednesday. Defender Cedric will also be absent due to suspension after picking up his third booking in the win over Maribor.

Chelsea are the favourites to win but since they have nothing to lose they may well field a less experienced team, making Sporting a good outside shot at 9/2 with Paddy Power.
With some of the more senior players rested for the clash, Loic Remy looks good to score first priced at 4/1 at Betway.
