Paraguay meet Argentina on Tuesday night (Wednesday morning UK time) as they teams battle it out for a place in the Copa America final.

This will be the second time the sides meet in this year’s competition after they tied 2-2 in the group stages. Argentina dominated the first half of the clash, going 2-0 up before Paraguay fought back to claim the draw.

Paraguay have gone on to impress in the competition, tying against Uruguay in the group games and sending Brazil home in the quarter-finals after winning on penalties. They now head into another clash with Gerardo Martino’s side and Nelson Valdez – who saved the day for Paraguay in the first clash – is keen that such action isn’t necessary in Wednesday’s game.

“We don’t want to make the same mistake and go back and forth without touching the ball,” he said.

“We are getting people to respect us again. We are among the top four in South America and we want more,” he added.

Paraguay were Copa America champions in both 1953 and 1979 and more recently they reached the final in 2011, only to lose out to Uruguay.

Argentina also entered the semi-final stage via a penalty shoot-out, defeating Colombia after a 0-0 draw in 90 minutes.

Their victory has left them as favourites to win the competition for the first time in 22 years.

Midfielder Javier Pastore is pleased with how far is side have come in the last year since Martino took over as coach, however there is still a lot of room for improvement. Argentina have scored just four goals in the last four games and superstar Lionel Messi has found the net just once.

“I think [the Colombia game] was the best of the era of Tata,” Pastore said. “We played perfectly, but we still lack a goal.”

With Messi and Sergio Aguero both hungry to score in Wednesday’s game, Argentina are expected to rediscover their impressive form and beat Paraguay.

Martino may, however, be concerned that both of his star players, as well has midfielder Javier Mascherano, have bookings and may look to exercise some caution in his selection to ensure they are not ruled out for the Copa America final.
