Chile take on rivals Peru on Monday (Tuesday BST) as they compete to win a place in the final of the Copa America.

The hosts beat champions Uruguay 1-0 in last week’s quarterfinal in a game that featured a controversial incident with Gonzalo Jara and Uruguay’s Edinson Cavani.

Jara appeared to poke Cavani in his rear, prompting Cavani to raise his hand which saw him sent off. Jara was also said to be winding Cavani up with comments about his father and was subsequently banned for three games by Conmebol.

Despite Jara’s importance in the team, reserve keeper Paulo Garces has assured fans that “we have 23 players and 23 are prepared for these circumstances. Hopefully whoever has to play can do so in the same way as Gonzalo has done.”

Peru have won the contest twice in the past and look confident ahead of the clash with Chile, approaching it off the back of a 3-1 quarterfinal victory over Bolivia. Paolo Guerrero was impressive in the game, scoring a hat trick to secure the victory for Peru.

The team’s progress in the tournament has perhaps been the biggest surprise of the competition, with Ricardo Gareca’s side proving they’re hungry for victory.

Peru and Chile’s shared border has meant a long-standing sporting rivalry between the two teams, ‘Clasico del Pacifico’, and there will certainly be no complacency in Tuesday’s game.

In a friendly last year, Chile won 3-0 as Peru finished with just 10 men after Rinaldo Cruzado was sent off in the 40th minute.

Chile defender Jose Pedro Fuenzalida is keen that the semi-final will be played in far better spirits than last year’s clash.

“The match between Chile and Peru holds a very important rivalry throughout history and last year we played a friendly which was quite hard, with plenty of aggression on their side,” he added.

“That’s created the expectation that these games have to go beyond the rules of football. We hope that the game is only remembered for what happens on the pitch.”
