Hosts Chile advanced to the quarter-finals of the Copa America by winning Group A and now face Uruguay who progressed as one of the two best third-placed nations in group stages.

There hasn’t been a dull moment for hosts Chile in this year’s competition. Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal has stunned on the pitch, proving himself to be the leading goalscorer with three goals to date.

His contributions assisted the Chileans in their quest for victory in Group A, picking up seven of a possible nine points with 10 goals in three matches. No other country in the competition scored more than four times in the group stages.

It is Chile’s attacking prowess that has led many to tip the hosts for their first ever Copa America trophy this year, having reached the final on four previous occasions without victory.

The real challenge lies ahead for Chile now with bigger teams to come, starting with Uruguay on Wednesday.

Head coach Jorge Sampaoli was questioned on his team’s aggressive style on the pitch and asked if they would play more conservatively as they progress through the competition.

“Chile will not change its style for the quarter-finals,” he said. “Playing like this is the only way to beat the big teams we will meet from here on.”

Despite Chile’s impressive performance in the competition so far, they have lost their last three quarter-final matches, to Mexico, Brazil and Venezuela respectively.

Oscar Tabarez’s Uruguayan side have struggled so far in the competition and, although reigning champions, they only just scraped a place in the quarter-finals.

Uruguay’s chances of becoming the fourth nation to retain the Copa America since 1991 look slim unless they can improve their form against Chile on Wednesday.

The absence of Luis Suarez due to suspension is noticeable and has had a serious impact on Uruguay. Edinson Cavani now carries the goal-scoring pressure but has yet to find the net in the competition.

Unlike their opponents on Wednesday, Uruguay have an impressive record in recent Copa America quarter-finals. La Celeste have reached the final eight in six of the last seven competitions and progressed to the semi-finals each time.

Chile are firm favourites to win in this tie with Uruguay’s poor form unlikely to improve without the return of star scorer Suarez.
