Heather Watson pulled off an impressive comeback win over Caroline Garcia to earn a second-round clash against Daniela Hantuchova at Wimbledon.

The British number one fought back from a set down before light stopped play at one set each on Monday night and was able to win the match when play resumed on Tuesday.

Watson’s 1-6 6-3 8-6 victory takes her to the second round at Wimbledon for the third time in her career.

Hantuchova is next up for Watson. The 32-year-old Slovak who was once number five in the world is now ranked at 89 and Watson is confident of a victory.

If Watson wins against Hantuchova it will most likely be favourite Serena Williams that she faces next and the Brit is relishing the prospect.

“Daniela is an experienced player, she plays very well on grass,” she said.

“It definitely won’t be easy but I really look forward to playing her again, as I played her last year in the Australian Open.

“I feel like I’ve had great results this year but I just haven’t been consistent enough at all and that’s why my ranking shows how it does.

“But tennis-wise, I feel I’m there. I feel great. Even when I’m not playing my best, I feel I can get through tough matches against really tough players. That’s just a real positive for me when I’m playing my best.”

Hantuchova enters the second round after defeating fellow Slovak Dominika Cibulkova 7-5 6-0 in her opening match. This is the first year she has won a first round match since 2011 but her best performance at Wimbledon was in 2002 where she lost to Serena Williams in the quarter-finals.

Despite her pedigree and years of experience, Hantuchova’s level has declined over the years. She did manage to reach the quarter-finals at the Aegon Classic in Birmingham earlier in June but before than she had lost seven consecutive first round matches.
