Just a few days after Europe retained the Ryder Cup some of its stars are back in action for the Dunhill Links Championship.
With Europe’s Ryder Cup players still recovering from their victory at the weekend they could surely be forgiven for taking some time off to relax but a few, Rory McIlroy among them, were straight back to the golf course on Tuesday.
McIlroy took to the course with his dad Gerry, as he does every year, to prepare for the Dunhill Links Championship at Kingsbarn.
The Northern Irishman will be joined by a stellar line-up for the tournament including fellow Ryder Cup heroes Martin Kaymer, Victor Dubuisson and Stephen Gallacher.
McIlroy is favourite to win the event which finishes on the Old Course at St Andrews on Sunday but he’ll face stiff competition to win the $5 million prize money.
Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley will also be taking part in the competition.
McGinley’s leadership of the European team’s Ryder Cup victory has been internationally praised but his return to tournament golf comes after several months away. The Irishman reduced his playing schedule after his appointment as Ryder Cup captain in January 2013 and was subsequently forced to stop altogether after a shoulder injury in July.
“I’m not tired and I don’t feel like I want to pull away,” commented McGinley, despite having no idea what state his game is in. “I think [my time as Ryder Cup captain] has been great. I’ve really enjoyed the ride the last 18 months. It’s been an absolute thrill and privilege and an honour.
“The Dunhill is a tournament I’ve always enjoyed playing, I love playing on those golf courses. God knows where my golf game is. I feel like there’s been no work gone into my golf game the last six months.
“Everything the previous captains have told me about your golf game struggling has been proved correct. When I’ve been on the golf course and on the practice ground, my mind has been drifting. It’s not been there and I’ve not had the intensity and concentration you need to practice and play.”
The tournament is one of the most famous pro-am contest and features several celebrities from various fields of sport, television and film.
Names to look out for include Shane Warne, Jamie Redknapp, Sir Steve Redgrave, Huey Lewis (minus the News), Jamie Dornan, Hugh Grant, Damon Hill and Damian Lewis.
If you feel like the Ryder Cup came and went too quickly then betting on the Dunhill Links Championship is a great way to continue the excitement!
