UFC Owner Endeavor Branching Out Into MLB

Damon Parks - 11 Dec 2021

Endeavor Group Holdings, Inc. is a corporation for media and talent agencies in the United States of America. The Ultimate Fighting Championship Mixed Martial Arts promotion company and Professional Bull Riders sports organisation owners have decided on which direction to head into next, acquiring affiliates of nine Minor League Baseball teams, including the Chicago Cubs and the New York Yankees.

The company announced its new plans on Wednesday December 8, 2021, but terms of the latest deal have not yet been made public. It’s obvious that the agency hopes to bring its experience with its other sports properties to bear in turning MLB into big business. Diamond Baseball Holdings has just been created by Endeavor and this new firm will be responsible for supervising food and beverage operations, media rights, naming rights, sponsorships, and ticket sales for the newly obtained teams.

Endeavor President Shapiro Weighs In

Speaking in a recent interview, Endeavor Group Holdings, Inc. President Mark Shapiro mentioned his business’ vast personal and professional experience with expanding opportunities just like this one. Diamond Baseball Holdings will be run by two veterans of the sports industry, Peter B. Freund and Pat Battle. Freund is the primary owner of the Memphis Redbirds, one of the MLB teams Endeavor is coming to have as well as a minority owner of the New York Yankees.

Major League Baseball reorganised its system for the Minor League earlier on in 2021, reducing the total number of teams by 25%. Players serve as MLB franchise employees, but the business operation stands apart. Some of the squads being purchased by Endeavor are owned by Big League Clubs while others belong to third parties.

Baseball players get their career start in the Minors and then try to work their way up to the Majors. Most never make it and have to settle for salaries much lower than the million dollar deals their Big League counterparts earn. In 2020, the teams in the Minor League suffered through heavy financial losses after the pandemic saw the season cancelled. In contrast to sports that have secured national television broadcasting deals, they did not have the media rights to pay for games with empty stadiums.

Shapiro believes that Diamond Baseball Holdings will be able to change this fact. Endeavor has already made the most of the massive demand for live sporting events across the media industry by increasing UFC television deals and sponsorship.
