England and New Zealand’s ODI series draws to a close on Saturday in a crucial showdown at Durham Emirates ICG.

The run-filled series has seen the hosts win the first and fourth ODIs, with the Black Caps picking up victories in the other two. England set yet another new record in Nottingham on Wednesday with their highest-ever run chase to reach a target of 350 with seven wickets remaining.

The victory in Nottingham brought the score level at 2-2, which means that Saturday’s final ODI will be the decider.

With or without a win in Durham, the ODI series has already proven a success for Eoin Morgan and his side. After a miserable showing at the World Cup just a few months ago, England’s 50-over team have displayed a far more aggressive style and there is talk of this being a new era for English cricket.

Morgan commented on his side’s new approach, stating, “We want to be unclouded in the way that we play and put opposition sides under pressure as much as we can.”

The pressure on New Zealand has been very noticeable across the four matches, with England’s batting unit being its biggest asset, scoring over 300 on multiple occasions.

The side’s run chase in the last match was the fourth-highest ever to be recorded in ODI history, beating their opponents’ 349 total with 36 balls remaining.

Although England’s performance may have been somewhat astonishing, New Zealand’s successes cannot be overlooked. Ross Taylor hit centuries in both of the tourists’ victories and Kane Williamson has totalled an impressive 346 runs in four innings.

Both sides have, however, suffered somewhat on the bowling from. The Black Caps are without left-arm seamer Trent Boult due to a back problem and both Chris Jordan and Liam Plunkett are sidelined for England.

England call-ups Craig and Jamie Overton have remained on the bench but could be thrown in at the deep end if the decision is made to make changes to the successful XI.

New Zealand may decide to recall Nathan McCullum and Andrew Mathieson has also been added to the squad.
