Europa League: Partizan v TottenhamJake Cooper | 12 Oct 2016
Spurs head to Serbia tonight as they play their opening Europa League Group C game against Partizan Belgrade. It’ll be a tough clash for the North London team and our betting experts are predicting goals from both sides.
Reaching the group stages after defeating AEL in the qualifiers, Tottenham will be hoping to better their performance in last year’s competition which saw them knocked out in the last 16.
Spurs won all of their games in last year’s group stages, defeating Anzhi, Sherif and Tromso at home and away. Their draw this season poses more of a threat with Mauricio Pochettino’s men set to face Asteras Tripolis and Besiktas as well as Partizan Belgrade.
Tottenham will have to work hard to beat their hosts with Marko Nikolic’s side having won all five of their matches in the Serbian league so far this season. Partizan just missed out on a spot in the Champions League having been knocked out on away goals by Bulgarian team Ludogorets.
Spurs started their Premier League season in good form but have come undone over the past couple of weeks, losing 3-0 to Liverpool and drawing with Sunderland.
Pochettino will need the right balance in selection if Tottenham are to come out on top. Defender Danny Rose will be rested for Thursday’s game leaving Wales international Ben Davies to deputise in his absence. It also looks like goalkeeper Michel Vorm will be making his debut for the side after joining from Swansea in the summer.
Striker Roberto Soldado could be key if he’s deemed fit enough to join the starting line-up and Milos Veljkovic is also likely to get some game time.
Pochettino said that Velkovic, who played for Serbia’s Under-18s last week, helped in the preparation for the game in Belgrade.
“We used his information to our benefit,” he explained. “Milos is a young and very good player and maybe he will have the chance to play. It is normal that he has information about Belgrade from his teammates in the national team, he knows about the club and history.
“We use it – not too much – but we use it.”

If Tottenham were to play as well as they did last season then they’d walk this, but their defence might not hold up under pressure so expect goals from both sides.
