Everton host Dynamo Kiev in the first leg of their last 16 Europa League clash this week as the two clubs meet each other for the first time.

The Toffees will be hoping for a strong start against their opponents at home before they travel to Ukraine for the return leg seven days later.

Dynamo Kiev reached this stage in the competition after a 4-3 aggregate victory over Guingamp. The Ukrainian team lost 2-1 in the first leg but managed to pull it back with a 3-1 win in their home ground.

Everton arrive in the last 16 after an impressive thrashing of BSC Young Boys in the last round. The Blues star striker Romelu Lukaku gave an inspiring display, finding the neck 5 times in total, including a hat trick in the away leg of the tie.

Roberto Martinez’s men have been more successful in Europe this season than domestically, with 3 out for victories in the Europa League. In the Premier League Everton have now gone 5 games without a win and failed to qualify for the FA Cup fourth round after losing to West Ham in the third round replay.

The Toffees should be well rested with over a week’s break since their last time out and Martinez will be hoping the long break will have been enough to recover from a demoralising 2-0 loss to Stoke City.

The defeat leaves Everton with 28 points from 28 matches in the League, making this their worst season in Premier League history.

Ivorian striker Arouna Kone could play a key role in the tie on Thursday, with Everton assistant boss Graeme Jones commenting, “His one-on-one qualities are as good as anyone.

“He gets hold of the ball, his character is phenomenal, he is the most level-headed and even mannered person you will meet in your life.”

Blues’ captain Phil Jagielka insists that Everton will be fearless in their tie with Dynamo Kiev and is confident that they can beat the Ukrainian side, at home and away.

“Young Boys was supposed to be a really tough tie over there and, as much as we rode our luck in the first half, the score could’ve been anything,” Jagielka said.

“We know we can go out and beat anyone on our day, so it is how we manage the tie.

“I can’t see us going out to play for a 0-0 on Thursday but at the same time we’ve got to be careful we don’t end up in a 5-4 game or something. There’s plenty to think about but we’ve played pretty well in Europe so far and hopefully we can continue.”
