Tottenham have a tough challenge ahead if they’re to continue to the next round of the Europa League when they face Fiorentina on Thursday.

The second leg of the Europa League last 32 clash between the two sides continues this week after Spurs failed to hold onto an early lead at White Hart Lane, tying 1-1 at the whistle.

Tottenham are in the middle of a packed couple of weeks, with the League Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley less than 72 hours after Thursday’s clash. Mauricio Pochettino was hoping to get a good lead in the first leg to enable him to rest some of his players but the side were unable to overpower their Italian visitors.

Although there have been suggestions by many pundits that Pochettino would rather exit the European competition now and focus on Sunday’s trophy as well as the Premier League, the Spurs boss is keen to think of Thursday’s game as the first of two cup finals this week.

“I think this is our first final before Sunday,” said Pochettino. “It’s important now but we are ready and confident to take the game to try to get the victory.”

Tottenham have managed to reach at least the final 16 in the Europa League in both the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons, but the North London club have not bettered a quarter final appearance in any European competition since 1984.

Pochettino will need to find the right balance between playing a powerful side and keeping his key playmakers fit for upcoming games.

“We need to decide on who plays because we have played two very tough games against Fiorentina and West Ham,” he said.

“So we need to analyse and decide the strongest team to play.”

Top scorer Harry Kane has started the last two games on the bench, but with the results of each of these games being less than satisfactory 1-1 and 2-2 draws, Pochettino could decide to start the home-grown talent on Thursday.

Fiorentina are on a strong run of 10 games without a loss, but Vincenzo Montella will be forced to play his second choice keeper this week after Ciprian Tatarusanu was ruled out due to back trouble.

The Italian outfit will also be without Spanish midfielder Borja Balero, however will be boosted by the inclusion of on-loan Chelsea winger Mohamed Sala.
