Arsenal have already guaranteed their place in the next stages of the Champions League but a win over Galatasaray on Tuesday could help them to take top spot in the group.

Arsene Wenger’s men confirmed their progression to the knockout stages with a 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund last time out in the competition, but Dortmund remain two points ahead in the group with one game left to play. Arsenal will be hoping for a first place finish in group D in order to face a better tie in the last 16.

If Arsenal win in Turkey they’ll need Dortmund to lose to guarantee topping the group, although a draw could work in their favour if they win by enough to overtake Dortmund’s goal difference.

Arsenal have been less than consistent in recent games. Although the North Londoners have enjoyed several high profile wins in recent weeks they struggled against Stoke City at the weekend, finding themselves 3-0 at half time and ultimately losing 3-2.

Wenger is planning on resting Alexis Sanchez against Galatasaray in order to save him for the weekend clash against an in-form Newcastle side.

“At the moment he looks like at some stage I have to give him a breather,” said the Arsenal boss. “I did it with many players before who were playing every game. I did it with Thierry Henry and Robin van Persie and it always helped them to get through without being injured.

“You have to know when to rest him and when not but I think at the moment he plays at his peak on the edge. He will not go to Turkey.”

Galatasaray have had a great run under new boss Hamza Hamzaoglu who took over from Cesare Prandelli after the Turkish side lost to Anderlect and have now won three consecutive games.

The side lost 4-1 to Arsenal in the first leg of their Champions League clash and the new manager will be hoping to avenge his team’s earlier defeat.

“In one week it is not possible to change many things, but above all out players are making sacrifices and they are beginning to play together,” he said this week.

“Previously they were only doing a single thing but could not do it together. Now it is a different picture.

“For me to win the love of Galatasaray fans it will be very, very important. I thank them all, we are doing good work on the pitch and we are trying to enjoy it.”

The hosts will be without Blerim Dzemaili (injured) and Selcuk Inan (suspended), while Wenger still has a long list of absentees to contend with. Although Olivier Giroud has returned to fitness, he is not able to return to Europe until the knockout stages, while Mikle Arteta, Nacho Monreal, Theo Walcott, Mesut Ozil, David Ospina, Abou Diaby and Jack Wilshere remain out through injury.
