Germany v USA: Who Will Win?

Jake Cooper | 12 Oct 2016

OK, so maybe at first glance this seems like an easy question, and you’re probably right, Germany do have the edge in this battle; but it might not be quite as cut-and-dried as it seems.

If Thursday’s game ends at a draw then both Joachim Low’s and Jurgen Klinsmann’s teams will be through to the knockout stages. With both managers hailing from Germany there is more of a personal rivalry, albeit a friendly one, than you might sometimes find between managers, but it’s certain that the USA will put up a good fight.

Some have argued conspiracy theories ahead of Thursday’s game, suggesting that the two German managers will agree to the draw that will see them both progress. In fact, Paddy Power is even offering slashed odds at 15/8 (2.88) for a draw, implying that there has been a lot of interest in this outcome.

But conspiracy theories aside, both teams have performed impressively up to this point in the tournament and a shock USA victory can’t be ruled out.

Germany might have been impressive in their opening World Cup match against Portugal – a 4-0 victory – but the USA came incredibly close to securing their place in the last 16 before losing a last minute goal in Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Portugal.

Who to Back

It looks like it will be an extremely exciting match, but considering Germany have scored an incredible 42 goals in their last 12 competitive games, the 11/5 (3.20) odds from Paddy Power for Germany to score three or more goals look bang on the money.
