International Champions Cup Final: Liverpool v Man United

Jake Cooper | 12 Oct 2016

Tonight’s faceoff between Liverpool and United will no doubt be a fierce battle between the two old rivals; but what’s at stake and who will come out on top?

The International Champions Cup is a fairly new tournament but the final will be anything but a friendly affair. Both teams have a lot to prove, with Liverpool signing several fresh faces this summer and United already on their third manager since Ferguson’s resignation last year.

For Liverpool, who came so close to winning last year’s Premier League, it’ll be a case of showing that there is life after Luis Suarez. With Suarez now playing for Barcelona, Brendan Rodgers has been acquiring plenty of new players to compensate for the gap in the starting line-up. At a press conference this week, Rodgers remarked that what he looks for in new players are those who are “technically and tactically gifted but also have the personality to work [in the team].”

It’s likely that we’ll see Liverpool’s young stars Sterling and Sturridge starting up front alongside new acquisition Adam Lallana, who’ll be given the chance to prove what he’s really made from after his move from Southampton.

Louis Van Gaal has already been making headlines for the strict approach he’s taken with United since becoming manager. Not only has he insisted on placing cameras around so that every minute detail of training can be analysed, he’s now also stated that he will have no problem with cutting loose United’s weaker players after the tour. If nothing else, this will certainly push the side to perform at their very best against Liverpool tonight.

With both teams achieving identical results at the group stage, who do we reckon has the edge in the International Champions Cup final tonight? Our money is on United, who look the stronger team.
