Ipswich Town have been on great form of late and there are many fans who believe that they could cause upset when they host Southampton in an FA Cup third round replay on Wednesday night.

Southampton, however, remain a well-organised and confident side who seem to be on their way to a top four finish in the Premier League and in reality are unlikely to be out-classed by Ipswich.

Championship side Ipswich Town frustrated Southampton at St Mary’s last week to earn Wednesday’s FA Cup third round replay.

Darren Ambrose put the visitors a goal up with a sharp header from Tyrone Ming’s cross, but Saints scored a hard-earned equaliser from Morgan Schneiderlin not long after. Despite Saints dominating the remainder of the 90 minutes, they couldn’t find a winner and Ipswich were delighted to earn the replay.

“I didn’t want to lose, that’s for sure,” commented Town boss Mick McCarthy. “Why can’t we have a cup run as well? I came down here and watched Arsenal play and Southampton were worthy winners.

“My players have learned how tough it is playing against a Premier League team and what quality they have. They probably learned a bit about themselves as well and felt they could cope with it – that’s as important as anything.”

Ronald Koeman was understandably more frustrated by the result last week as the upset was certainly a shock.

“We have to play the replay and that wasn’t what I expected,” said the Southampton boss. “Am I annoyed? Of course, because we can’t make a lot of changes in the team and I don’t like to make changes. I believe in playing the strongest team.”

Ipswich have been enjoying a long undefeated run in the Championship but this was ended by Derby at the weekend after they lost 1-0 at home to the Rams.

Southampton on the other hand continued to look strong in the League, beating Man United 1-0 to take third place in the table.
