Kei Nishikori vs Jo-Wilfried Tsonga | Tuesday 2 June, 2015 | Roland Garros | 15.00

An intriguing quarter final match takes place on Tuesday when the only remaining Frenchmen, Jo-Wilfred Tsonga, faces Japanese No.1 Kei Nishikori to determine who will make it to the final four at Roland Garros.

This marks the sixth time these two meet on a professional tour, with Nishikori getting the better of the Frenchmen on four of those occasions including a win in their most recent encounter at the Paris Masters last season. However, this will be their first meeting on clay which could impact on their performances.

Tsonga closed out a solid performance against Tomas Berdych to secure his spot in the quarter final. After leading over his opponent in the first two sets, Tsonga failed to serve out the match on the third and was forced to endure a tough fourth set before closing out the win 6-3, 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-3.

In a historic match on Sunday, Kei Nishikori became the second Japanese player to ever reach the quarter-final stage of the French Open. He struck 40 winners to defeat Teymuraz Gabashvili 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 in two minutes short of two hours.

Nishikori is on exceptional form in 2015, winning 35 of his 42 matches so far this season. He won in Barcelona before reaching the semis in Madrid and the quarters in Rome in the build-up to Roland Garros. He will now go on to face the last remaining Frenchman in the draw.

“We haven’t played [in] a long time,” Nishikori said, ahead of the Tsonga match.

“He’s coming back very strong. He has a big serve [and] big forehand. He’s always a dangerous player… So it’s going to be fun match.”

Nishikori heads into this quarter-final clash as a worthy favourite. The world number five leads their head-to-head record but it is worth noting that none of those victories have been in straight sets.

Tsonga has actually won the first set in four of their five encounters and we should not expect a straight-forward win for the Japanese star when these two battle it out on Tuesday.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga vs Kei Nishikori Betting Tips

Nishikori’s superior form and head-to-head advantage naturally marks him out as favourite, priced at 2/7 with Betway. However, Tsonga has real momentum behind him at this tournament, particularly after beating Berdych, and looks good for 5/2 odds.
