Brendan Rodgers will be hoping his Liverpool side can build on their recent success on Tuesday when they visit struggling Leicester City.

Liverpool have had a tricky start to the season and headed into the weekend’s fixtures on the back of three consecutive league defeats. The Reds’ losses to Newcastle, Chelsea and Crystal Palace had caused much speculation about the possibility that Rodgers would soon be stepping down.

However a late goal from Glen Johnson against Stoke on Saturday gave Liverpool a much-needed 1-0 victory at Anfield.

Captain Steven Gerrard was left on the sidelines for the game, despite the day marking his 16th anniversary at Liverpool, and will now almost certainly be recalled for the clash with Stoke. A win at the King Power stadium could see Liverpool rise back up the table toward the European contention places in the table.

“We’re in a moment now where we need to get results and we need to obviously improve our style of play but we need to have the confidence in the team,” explained Rodgers of the team’s future.

“We’re slowly, in the last couple of games, getting back to a confident level. You can’t play perfect football all of the time and for us we’ve shown wonderful character this week.

“I was very satisfied and my overriding feeling was that I was delighted for the players because they’re a wonderful group.”

Rodgers has fitness worries regarding Mario Balotelli, Mamadou Sakho and Suso.

Leicester have endured an even more disappointing month that Liverpool, collecting only a single point from four games. Saturday’s 3-2 loss to QPR resulted in the Tigers’ dropping to the bottom of the table.

Nigel Pearson took some positive points from the weekend’s game, noting his side’s creative and attacking power they displayed at Loftus Road, but was disappointed with the defensive mistakes that ultimately left them a goal behind their opponents.

“The reality is we’re not winning enough games at the moment,” he said. “You could look at a lot of other sides in the division at the minute who will probably say exactly the same thing.

“It’s not about talking about it, it’s about going out there and doing it. There’s only ourselves that can rectify our own results.

“We were very positive and created chances [against QPR] but still couldn’t win the game. That’s frustrating for us all and I feel for the players because of that.”

Matt Upson is a doubt for Pearson having only recently returned to training from an ankle problem, while Dean Hammond is ruled out due to a calf injury.

Liverpool should have this in the bag, especially having ended their November duck with a victory against Stoke. William Hill has a 1-0 win for the visitors at 15/2.

With Gerrard set to return on Tuesday to begin his seventeenth year at the club, the Liverpool captain is a good shout to score first at 7/1 with Betway.
