Liverpool vs Arsenal | Sunday 21 December, 2014 | Anfield | 16.00
Liverpool host Arsenal at Anfield this Sunday in a game that could be highly significant to both teams.
The Reds’ season so far has been particularly disappointing and at eleventh in the table they look highly unlikely to qualify for the Champions League next year.
Arsenal, too, have had some struggles this season particularly with several injury woes and a win at Anfield could be crucial for a top four finish.
Brendan Rodgers will be without Glen Johnson, Jon Flanagan, Suso and Daniel Sturridge who are all injured currently while Dejan Lovren may be fit enough to feature. Mario Balotelli also misses out on the clash after receiving a ban for controversial comments on Instagram.
Rodgers will be keen to start Raheem Sterling who scored a brace in the side’s 3-1 League Cup quarter-final victory over Bournemouth and Adam Lallana will be a likely pick alongside him.
Arsene Wenger’s injury crisis continues with David Ospina, Laurent Koscielny, Nacho Monreal, Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil, Jack Wilshere, Mikel Arteta, Theo Walcott, Serge Gnabry and Abou Diaby all sidelined while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Tomas Rosicky remain doubts.
Chilean striker Alexis Sanchez will be making life difficult for Liverpool having scored 14 goals already this season in all competitions.
Despite Liverpool’s low standing in the table they have in fact been displaying far more impressive form in recent weeks, particularly against United last weekend when they ultimately lost 3-0. If Rodgers’ men continue to push then they might start seeing the results they’re after.
Wenger, like Rodgers, has come under heavy criticism in recent weeks for Arsenal’s questionable form, yet the Gunners are only two points off fourth place in the table and that’s without several of their key playmakers. Arsenal also sailed through the Champions League group stages while Liverpool failed to progress to the final 16.
Liverpool vs Arsenal Betting Tips
It’s a tough to call who’ll come out on top in what looks set to be the weekend’s most exciting game, although Arsenal have a slight edge at 9/2 with William Hill.
We’ll certainly be backing Alexis Sanchez to score first, priced at 11/2 at Betway.
