Liverpool look to continue their unbeaten run in the first leg of their Europa League clash against Turkish side Besiktas on Thursday.

The Reds began their season in the Champions League but after failing to secure a first or second place spot in their group, finishing behind Real Madrid and Basel, Brendan Rodgers men were demoted to the Europa League.

Rodgers will also be thinking ahead to Liverpool’s upcoming Premier League challenges, facing both Southampton and Man City in the next couple of weeks, with the trip to St Mary’s just three days after the Besiktas first leg.

While Mario Balotelli, Dejan Lovren and Glen Johnson could feature in Thursday’s lineup, Steven Gerrard (hamstring) and Raheem Sterling (foot) are both ruled out until at least the Southampton trip and may not be risked there either.

Besiktas’ Demba Ba is looking for a repeat of the last time he faced a Liverpool side at Anfield, as the Senegal international scored the opening goal for Chelsea against the Reds last April. Ba took advantage of a Steven Gerrard slip to score the opener, helping to secure the 2-0 win for former club Chelsea and damage Liverpool’s title chances that year.

“It is going to be a fun trip to Liverpool because I love playing in England,” he commented ahead of the clash. “The atmosphere at Anfield is going to be amazing as it always is.

“I did my job against Liverpool last season, Gerrard was just unlucky. I did what I had to and hope to do the same this time around.”

The last time Besiktas visited Anfield was during the 2007-08 Champions League when Liverpool walked away victors, but without several key players the game may go a different way seven years on.

Liverpool are without a win in Europe in five fixtures but midfielder Philippe Coutinho is hoping to turn that around on Thursday.

“I think the team has been playing well and that is important for Liverpool,” he said. “I work with my teammates and, of course, I always want to do a good job and improve, but I think the team has been playing well.

“I always work hard, but of course there are always things to improve and one of them is to score more goals.

“I have been working on that and in my position that is important. That is something I should improve.”
