Chelsea head to Merseyside on Tuesday to face Liverpool in the first leg of the League Cup semi-final.
Jose Mourinho’s men have battled over the last couple of weeks to retain their spot at the top of the Premier League table and they continue to dominate in all competitions. Liverpool have had a far more mixed season but are currently on a great run with just one loss in their last 14 games in all competitions.
Brendan Rodgers will be looking to his men to continue their resurgence on Tuesday as they host the first leg of the League Cup semi-final at Anfield. The Reds are unbeaten in eight games since they lost to Manchester United in December, but their subsequent streak began with a 3-1 League Cup quarter-final victory over Bournemouth.
Liverpool’s most recent victory came at Villa Park at the weekend where they beat Aston Villa 2-0, but Rodgers insists there is still plenty of room for improvement ahead of Chelsea’s visit on Tuesday.
“There has been a lot of hard work,” commented Rodgers. “The players have got confidence now in the way of working and they have been performing very, very well.
“There’s a lot of improvement left in this team and group but we’re building towards the future here at the club. We have been progressing very well.
“You will always be looking to improve, no matter how well you are doing. It’s the challenge when you work with young players; you saw the youthfulness in the team on Saturday.
“We obviously had a bump in the road in the early part of the season but, in this period, the team is performing at a good level – defensively strong and playing some wonderful football. It’s pleasing but we have to keep improving.”
Chelsea have scored 51 goals in 22 Premier League games so far this season – an impressive feat and 20 more than League Cup opponents Liverpool. After getting off to an embarrassing start to the New Year with a 5-3 loss at Tottenham, the Blues have won all three of their subsequent games including a 5-0 victory at Swansea on Saturday.
Mourinho’s men last travelled to Anfield in November where they beat Liverpool 2-1 and will be hoping for a repeat of that victory in Tuesday’s clash.
Liverpool were without captain Steven Gerrard on Saturday but he looks set to return on Tuesday, with Glen Johnson and Adam Lallana also hopeful to be fit to make the starting XI.
Chelsea could be boosted by the return of first choice keeper Thibaut Courtois from a finger injury although Petr Cech has managed to keep a clean sheet throughout the last three games.
