Liverpool booked their place in next weekend’s FA Cup semifinal after a win over Blackburn but must first improve their form in the League with a win over Newcastle on Monday.

Brendan Rodgers’ men are hoping to lift the silverware in the FA Cup this year but the Reds will need to return to form in the League if they wish to secure a top-four finish.

Liverpool’s last two League outings saw them lose to both Manchester United (1-2) and Arsenal (4-1) but they will be determined to take the three points at home on Monday against Newcastle United.

Last week’s 2-0 replay win at Ewood Park will hopefully have boosted morale in the Anfield camp and will help them to maintain some winning momentum.

“The performance and the result the other night puts us back on track,” said Rodgers of his team’s performance in the Cup. “Hopefully from that results we can build the momentum through until end of season.

“Defensively as a collective we were very good. We’d gone six games away from home and not conceded a goal. We wanted to return to that mentality in that game. We feel we can create enough opportunities.

“I though Dejan Lovren was outstanding on the evening, Glen Johnson came in and did a great job having not played for a little bit.

“Simon Mignolet made a couple of great saves when he had to and as a team we pressed the ball really and nullified most of their threats. I was important for us to defend well.

“It was an excellent performance and a good result in a tough tie. We’ll just take each game at a time now and really focus on the Newcastle game.”

Newcastle faced disappointment last time out, losing 1-0 in the derby to rivals Sunderland and look to recover from a run of four consecutive losses.

Despite Newcastle’s recent bad luck, Rodgers isn’t underestimating the Magpies, or Carver as their manager, heading into the clash.

“They’re probably a little bit unfortunate in that they have a number of players out injured,” he said after their derby loss last week. “They’ve got arguably the most passionate man involved in John Carver. Newcastle United runs right through him.

“We expect it to be a tough game, they always are against Newcastle. For us, being at home for the first time in a few weeks, we’ll look to keep our performance levels up and get the win.”

Liverpool remain without Steven Gerrard and Martin Skrtel who are both out on suspension, but could welcome back Jordon Ibe and Mario Balotelli for the clash. Adam Lallana is unlikely to be confirmed fit for the game due to a groin injury.

Newcastle are without several key players, including Steven Taylor (Achilles), Fabricio Coloccini (suspension), Papiss Cisse (suspension) and Siem de Jong (lung).

Although Newcastle won at home the last time these two sides met, it looks like the odds are in Liverpool’s favour this time around.
