Barcelona travel to Manchester City on Tuesday as they make a bid for their eighth consecutive Champions League quarter final spot.

The clash gives Manuel Pellegrini’s men the chance to get revenge on Barcelona for knocking them out at this stage in the competition last year with a 4-1 aggregate scoreline.

For Barcelona the outcome of this game could be one of the most critical results of their season so far.

“It is one of the games of the year, the most important until now,” commented Gerard Pique, Barcelona centre back.

“They will try to attack us and that suits us. It has been proven over the past few months that we are better against teams that attack us because we can counter attack.”

Barcelona have enjoyed a stunning run of 11 consecutive victories but that came to an end on Saturday when they lost 1-0 to Malaga.

Manager Luis Enrique will be quietly confident ahead of this game as his men walked through to the knockout stage with ease, unlike City who squeezed through after some tough clashes with Bayern Munich and Roma.

This is the second year running that Man City have made it past the group stages after failing to advance in 2011-12 and 2012-13.

Despite the Premier League champions’ impressive performances in the league, including a 5-0 hammering of Newcastle at the weekend, the side know they face a real challenge against Barcelona.

“This is a new game and we’re not the same as we were last season and they aren’t either,” City striker Sergio Aguero commented on the club’s website.

“Both teams have had reinforcements that have improved the squad so we’ll have to see what kind of game it is, but one thing I think I can say with confidence is that they are both going to be great games.”

Barcelona will be a formidable side in this clash with a powerful attacking force in Neymar, Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.

With Yaya Toure suspended and James Milner a doubt for City, the hosts’ still have some impressive scoring talent in Edin Dzeko, Sergio Aguero and potentially Wilfried Bony, who hopes to make his first start since transferring from Swansea City in January.
