Manchester City have equalled Chelsea’s impressive goal tally with 41 goals in the Premier League this season and look set to continue to make an impact against Sunderland on Thursday.

Manuel Pellegrini’s men were held to a shock 2-2 draw at home by a struggling Burnley side on Sunday so will stop at nothing to redeem themselves against the Black Cats.

City’s draw against Burnley could have been critical in their title chase were it not for the fact that table-leaders Chelsea were also held to a draw on the same day, in their case by Southampton. The Citizens can’t afford any more mistakes, however, and will continue to pile the pressure on to close the three point gap on the west London club.

Sunderland’s inconsistency this season have meant that they’ve been unable to move far away from the relegation zone, with their last three games including a win at Newcastle, a home defeat to Hull City and a draw at Villa Park.

Gus Poyet’s men have scored just 16 goals this season and will be lucky to get any past the City defence on Thursday. Sunderland’s defence has proven easily to break, however, with the side having conceded 27 goals in total. The real difficult for Poyet will be working out a more stalwart line-up since City’s attack comes not only from the likes of Aguero at the front but also David Silva in midfield.

Sunderland will be relieved, however, that Yaya Toure looks unlikely to feature due to a groin problem.

“We’ll see if he’s fit,” explained Pellegrini after the Ivorian remained on the bench against Burnley. “It’s very difficult to know because he still has some problem in his calf.”

Despite Sunderland’s occasional habit of beating the top teams, City look to have this game in the bag. Betway has the Sky Blues at 13/2 to win 3-0 while Stevan Jovetic looks good to score first at 10/3 with William Hill.
