Arsenal head north this Sunday, looking to put the disappointment of Monday’s 1-0 defeat to Swansea behind them.

While Arsenal have secured a place in the top four and Manchester United have effectively done likewise, Arsenal’s defeat to Swansea means the two teams are still locked in a battle to avoid a potentially perilous qualifier in order to reach the all-important Champions League group phase.

Arsenal are currently two points clear of the Red Devils and, if Arsene Wenger’s men can avoid defeat this weekend, it would leave them in a guaranteed third place.

However, over the last 10 seasons, this fixture has been dominated by Manchester United with Arsenal winning just six of the last 30 games between the two clubs

Wenger has challenged Arsenal to make a symbolic statement by beating Manchester United on their own turf to secure their place in the Champions League, and he is convinced that his team can pull off another strong performance in Manchester on Sunday.

“We can make a symbolic statement because we won over there in the FA Cup, so to reproduce that would be psychologically important.

“[We can show] that we can beat Manchester United away from home, that we have won away from home [again]. Overall our recent away form has been very strong and that is always a sign of a team who is in progress.”

“Any result will be a positive result. A draw or a win would be great for us.”

After three consecutive defeats, United returned to winning ways against Crystal Palace last weekend and need just a point to secure Champions League qualification, although that could be secured before the match at Old Trafford if Liverpool fail to beat Crystal Palace at Anfield on Saturday.

Defender Marco Rojo has missed the last four games for United and is doubtful, along with Robin van Persie and Angel Di Maria.

As for Arsenal, striker Danny Welbeck won’t face his former club after he was ruled out with a knee injury.
