The FA Cup action this weekend saves the best until last with the clash of old rivals Manchester United and Arsenal at Old Trafford.
The last two meetings between these two sides in the FA Cup have seen United dominate, winning 4-0 in 2007-8 and 2-0 in 2010, but there’s no doubt that this season the Gunners have displayed more consistent good form.
Louis van Gaal has somehow scraped together enough points this season to bring Man United up to fourth in the table, but he’s still not managed to create a fool proof system, resulting in unreliable displays.
Arsene Wenger’s men haven’t won at Old Trafford in nearly 9 years but they enter the tie on a run of five wins in domestic competitions. Arsenal have come into their stride in the second half of this season and while United could well slide before May, the Gunners look likely to stay put in the top four.
Arsenal’s Gabriel Paulista has been ruled out of Monday’s FA Cup quarter final at Old Trafford due to a hamstring problem, while keeper Wojcjech Szczesny faces a fitness struggle of his own after missing the midweek Premier League clash at QPR due to illness.
Nacho Monreal (back) and Mathieu Flamini (hamstring) are both hoping to return for Monday, however Jack Wilshere (ankle), Mikel Arteta (ankle) and Abou Diaby (shoulder) continue to recover from injury.
Van Gaal has confirmed ahead of the clash that United have no new injury concerns, with Robin van Persie looking to remain the club’s only absentee.
United Midfielder Ander Herrera has been in top form lately and is relishing facing the Gunners next week despite the strength of their opponents.
“We are looking forward to our match in the FA Cup because it’s a very big chance to win a trophy this season,” the Spaniard told Man United media. “But we have to respect Arsenal because they are playing very well.
“We are Manchester United and we are not afraid. We are going to play in front of our fans and we need them to [help us] win.”
