Manchester United host Manchester City this Sunday in what is set to be the most nail-biting derby of the year.

After getting off to a dismal start to the season, United managed to climb their way back up the table and are now sitting in third position, just one point behind Arsenal and one ahead of opponents City.

The title-holders on the other hand have fallen from second place in the table with shock defeats at the hands of Burnley (1-0) and Crystal Palace (2-1) in the last month.

The three points at stake are critical for both Manchester sides, with the pressure of a top four finish intensifying what is already a heated rivalry.

Manchester United will be looking continue the their upwards momentum this weekend in a bid to overtake Arsenal and close the gap on Chelsea, who remain seven points clear at the top with a game in hand.

The Red Devils approach the clash on a run of excellent form, having won all five of their last matches and losing only once in their last ten League games. Although it remains a long shot, Louis Van Gaal insists that his men are still aiming to close out the season as champions.

City’s poor run in recent weeks is their worst since Manuel Pellegrini took over as boss. At this stage the Citizens’ focus is less on the title than on finishing in the top four for a Champions League spot next year.

Manchester United have lost the last four times they’ve played their old rivals but they look on target to put an end to that streak this Sunday.

The Red Devils may be without Chris Smalling after he picked up an illness in Italy over a week ago and Jonny Evans remains suspended. Other than that Robin van Persie is the only possible absentee for Van Gaal although there is a chance he will come off the bench, with Wayne Rooney continuing to act as the main striker.

Pellegrini will have his pick of the squad with very few injury problems, however he may be looking to shake up the lineup somewhat after losing to Crystal Palace on Monday.
