Manchester United vs Southampton | Sunday 11 January, 2015 | Old Trafford | 16.00
Man United sit just one point above Southampton in the Premier League ahead of the weekend’s third place battle at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils stole a win at St Mary’s Stadium when the two sides met in December during a pitiful run for the Saints, but Ronald Koeman’s men have returned to form and will be out for revenge at Old Trafford.
Louis van Gaal will welcome back Michael Carrick and Angel di Maria to the midfield but Ashley Young remains unable to play due to a hamstring problem. Luke Shaw is expected to overcome a knock in time to face his former club for the first time.
Southampton may debut Dutch winger Eljero Elia, on loan from German club Werder Bremen. Nathaniel Clyne will return from an ankle injury but Maya Yoshida and Sadio Mane will miss out due to international duty.
Man United have spent the past couple of months climbing the table after a slow start to the season and are confident of a top four finish to the year. Van Gaal has, however, admitted that there is still plenty of room for the team to improve further.
Since overcoming their recent blip Southampton are now looking to improve on their eighth place finish last season and they have already defied all expectations to be as high up in the table as they are. The Saints are currently unbeaten in five games and will certainly give United a run for their money on Sunday.
Statistically, however, Koeman’s men have their work cut out for them since they’ve failed to win a league game at Old Trafford in over 27 years. Additionally United have only lost one home game in 15 League matches.
Manchester United vs Southampton Betting Tips
If you only watch one game this weekend then this will be the one to watch. United are firm favourites to win at home but Southampton won’t make it easy for them, so a 2-1 win is a good bet at 15/2 (Betway).
