The first match of the English Premier League season kicks off on Saturday with a battle between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford

The two teams were separated by just six points by the end of the last campaign as Manchester United edged the North London club for the final Champions League spot.

Many doubt that they will be as close this year, however, with Manchester United dishing out another $100 million in transfer fees over the summer.

With Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin – the former a World Cup winner, the latter one of the best players in England in the past three years – joining Michael Carrick, Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera, a Premier League title may well be in the books for Louis van Gaal this season.

United defeated Tottenham 3-0 in March in a match that was described by many as one of the best performances of the season.

The series between the two teams over the last 14 years has been ugly from a Spurs perspective. In the last 31 matches, Tottenham have won just twice.

It has been a low-key transfer window at Spurs, but Mauricio Pochettino has strengthened his defence after conceding more goals than relegated Hull City last season. Toby Alderweireld and Kevin Wimmer have bolstered the centre, while Kieran Trippier provides another option at right-back.

The transfer window is still wide open, however, and the Lilywhites are likely to add more new faces before it shuts on September 1.

With games against Real Madrid on Tuesday evening and AC Milan on Wednesday, Pochettino admits his players may not be fully ready for their opening Premier League game on Saturday.

“You need to accept to come to the tournament before the end of the last season and you never know (your fixtures),” he said.

“It is not a big problem. We are ready to compete tomorrow and Wednesday and after to compete on Saturday.

“We tried to change the (United) game to Sunday but it was impossible for the Premier League and we said we needed to manage (things) in a different way.”
