Mikhail Kukushkin vs Andy Murray | Tuesday 30 June, 2015 | Wimbledon | 11.30
Andy Murray will come head to head with Mikhail Kukushkin on Tuesday in the first round of the Championships, Wimbledon 2015.
This is the third time these two meet, with Murray winning the first two matches. He was taken to three sets in Brisbane three years ago and they met again at the Australian Open just weeks later, when Kukushkin retired in the third set of their last 16 encounter having won just two games.
Andy Murray is in brilliant form ahead of the tournament after reaching the French Open semi-final. He warmed up for Wimbledon by winning his fourth Queen’s Club title and has won 10 of his last 11 singles matches.
Murray hasn’t been eliminated in the first round of a major since the 2008 Australian Open and he has reached the final in two of his last three Wimbledon appearances.
The Dunblane-born star was beaten by Grigor Dimitrov in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon last year – as he relinquished his 2013 title – and will be keen to improve on that showing this time around. He is, however, wary of his opponent.
“He’s a good player,” Murray said. “He’s had some big tournaments in the past. I think he played Rafa [Nadal] pretty close here last year. He can play well on the grass. He plays predominantly from the baseline. He’s a good ball-striker. If you give him time to dictate the points, he’s a tough guy to beat.”
Mikhail Kukushkin has had a tough season and is coming off a loss to Alexander Zverev in a match in which he gained just two points. He heads into Wimbledon having won just one of his last six matches.
Kukushkin, who is currently ranked 58th in the world lost to Rafael Nadal in four sets in the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2014, his best year at the All England Club so far.
He has, however, won his only ATP Tour title by beating Mikhail Youzhny at the St Petersburg Open in 2010 and reached the Apia International final in January.
