Napoli vs Dnipro | Thursday 7 May, 2015 | Stadio San Paolo | 20.05
Napoli look confident of victory ahead of their clash with Dnipro on Thursday with veteran boss Rafa Benitez on course for another victory in Europe’s second-tier tournament.
The Spaniard, who has won the Europa League with both Valencia and Chelsea in the past, is confident of a win at the Stadio San Paolo when they welcome Ukrainian outfit Dnipro to the first leg of the semi-final on Thursday.
Napoli enjoyed a taste of success earlier in the season in the Supercoppa Italiana and will be looking to add to their silverware in the Europa League.
The quarter-finals saw the Italian side dominate against opponents Wolfsburg where they walked out 6-3 aggregate winners to reach the final four.
Benitez was pleased to see Ivan Strinic return for a 3-0 Serie A win over Milan at the weekend but will remain without Michu due to a thigh injury.
Despite success at the weekend against his former club, the Spaniard admits there is too much at stake not to take his opponents seriously on Thursday.
“The prize for going through is very important, a place in the final of a European competition no less.
“Dnipro has already shown their capacity and potential by beating teams like Olympiakos, Ajax and Club Brugge, the latter unbeaten up until the quarter-final.
“All of those teams are well-known in Europe and have been knocked out by this Ukrainian team.
“On the other hand I have absolute confidence in my players’ potential because of what they have already achieved and what they show every day in the training sessions. I am sure they are capable of showing even more.”
Dnipro are the clear underdogs as Myron Markevych’s men reach the semi-finals for the first time, but the Ukrainian side won’t be brushed aside easily.
Dnipro have only won one of eight away games in Europe this season and are facing a side who have scored 25 goals in the competition, better than any other side.
Dnipro are keen to cause another upset in the competition, with midfielder Valeriy Fedorchuk explaining, “Few people believed we could get this far at the beginning of the season but now we are just a couple of steps from the final, they are looking at us very differently.
“We are not afraid of anybody now. Napoli are very strong, obviously, full of top-class players.
“But we have wings now and will do our best to reach the final. The lads are totally focused on the next match; we don’t have time to think about anything else.”
Markevych is hoping for Matheus to recover from a back injury to help in attack, but Roman Zozulya looks to remain side-lined with a knee problem.
