Southampton travel to Newcastle in high spirits following a win at Manchester United that saw them secure third place in the Premier League table.

In contrast to Southampton’s impressive run, Newcastle have had a rocky season and currently occupy tenth place in the table, however the Magpies are far from safe and their future is unclear. Manager Alan Pardew left the club at the beginning of the month to take over at Crystal Palace leaving John Carver as caretaker.

Pardew managed to spark an upturn in the club’s prospects from a very slow start to the season but since his resignation Newcastle’s form has started to slip again.

The Magpies drew to Burnley on New Year’s Day before losing 1-0 to Leicester City in the FA Cup and 2-0 to Chelsea last weekend. With striker Papiss Cisse away on African Nations Cup duty, Newcastle are struggling to find the net which could see them fall right down the table again.

Without any strong forwards Newcastle will be relying on a strong performance from Moussa Sissoko to break through the Southampton back line. The midfielder has spoken on several occasions of his desire to play in an attacking role so the pressure will be on to prove himself.

Southampton head into Saturday’s game on a run of seven games undefeated in all competitions and sitting in third in the League. A second half goal and powerful defence at Old Trafford on Sunday allowed the Saints to take three points from United, overtaking them in the table.

Captain Jose Fonte took control of the backline and proved himself yet again as one of the Premier League’s top defenders. Toby Alderweireld, however, was taken off early due to an injury, putting added pressure on the Saints’ defence; it’s unknown as to whether Alderweireld will be fit to play in Saturday’s clash at Loftus Road.

Southampton need a win if they’re to stay in with a chance of a top four finish this season and they’ve got the strength to overpower a flagging Newcastle.

Newcastle United vs Southampton Betting Tips

The last two meetings between these sides resulted in 4-0 wins for the Saints and considering that Newcastle is without any real power at the front we could be looking at a similar result.

With the slight disadvantage of playing away the scoreline may not be particularly high, but a 2-0 Southampton victory looks good at 19/2 with Betway.

Graziano Pelle will be hoping to find the net at Loftus Road and is your best bet for first goal at 9/2 with Paddy Power.
