After their midweek European exit, Arsenal will be heading north this weekend for their Premiere League clash against Newcastle United at St James Park.

The Gunners were kicked out of the Champions League on away goals after their 3-3 aggregate result against Monaco, having lost the first leg at the Emirates.

They return to Premier League action on Saturday with hopes of banishing their midweek disappointment by adding to their points tally.

Arsenal have not lost at St James Park since December 2005 and they have sealed a 1-0 victory on their last two visits.

“We have good memories at Newcastle but they are always very tight, very difficult games,” said manager Arsene Wenger.

“They are in a position where they are not under threat to go down.

“They always have a very motivated crowd and they always play well against us, which makes it a tight game.”

With nine games remaining, Wenger’s side trail leaders Chelsea by seven points. Their 3-0 London derby victory over West Ham in their last league outing sent them to within a point of second-placed Manchester City in the Premier League table.

The Blues, who have a game in hand, may be too far out of Arsenal’s sights, but runners-up remains an achievable target and would represent the club’s highest finish since the 2004-05 season.

Like Arsenal, Newcastle are coming into the game following disappointment. Their 3-0 defeat to Everton last weekend was their second successive loss in the league. They have managed only one win in their last six league matches and have failed to score in their last three Premier League home games against the Gunners.

Interim manager John Carver’s job has been made all the more difficult by an absentee list which includes as many as 13 senior players, all of whom will be unavailable for Arsenal’s visit to St James’ Park.

Arsenal will be without Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jack Wilshere, Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Debuchy due to injury.
