This weekend’s Premier League fixtures kick off with Newcastle United tackling Liverpool in what could be one of the most closely contested games of the weekend.

Newcastle have really hit their straps in their last two Premier League games, winning 2-1 against Tottenham last weekend and 1-0 against Leicester City.

To top it off, the Magpies put on a stunning display in the League Cup on Wednesday, knocking title-holders Manchester City out of the competition.

Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew fielded a fairly inexperienced side against City, who sit in third place on the Premier League table but the youthful team rewarded his faith in them with energy and commitment in a superb win.

Teenaged midfielder Rolando Aarons scored the opening goal in the sixth minute and the away side managed to survive several attempts and plenty of pressure from City to hang on and land the killer blow to defeat them. With just 15 minutes to go, Newcastle substitute Moussa Sissoko slipped the ball past Willy Caballero to secure the victory.

Liverpool seem to have had a mixed season in the Premier League so far and came within minutes of losing to Swansea City in the League Cup on Tuesday.

Their Cup game this week saw the Reds 1-0 down going into the last five minutes of the game when they managed to turn it around with goals from Mario Balotelli and Dejan Lovren, giving them a 2-1 victory.

Balotelli’s goal was only his second competitive goal this season despite being signed to fill the gap left by Liverpool’s top goal-scorer last season, Luis Suarez. After a long goal drought for the Italian, the midweek goal will have taken some of the pressure off his shoulders and could open the floodgates for him at the weekend.

Liverpool’s away record looks good, the side having scored eight goals in four away games. With Newcastle’s home average at 2 goals a game, could we be looking at a draw at St James’ Park on Saturday?

There’s good money to be won on the draw, priced at 23/10 or, even better, 11/1 for a 2-2 tie, both at Betway.

Mario Balotelli is an attractive bet for first goalscorer at 9/2 at Betfred. The 25-year-old’s unpredictability keeps his odds long but he’s well worth a wager now that he’s proven himself against Swansea this week.
