Andy Murray will face world number one Novak Djokovic on Friday as he attempts to reach the French Open final for the first time.

The Briton secured his semi-final spot by beating David Ferrer 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 5-7 6-1 in one of his best clay-court wins on Wednesday. It was his fifth consecutive win on clay and a first victory in four attempts against the Spaniard on his signature surface.

Djokovic – who is seeking to complete a career Grand Slam at Roland Garros – represents a significant new challenge to the world number three. Murray has lost to the Serb at the last two Grand Slams, both times in four sets, in their 2014 US Open quarter-final and the Australian open final this year.

However, it is four years since they last played on clay, a close encounter that Djokovic narrowly won despite his Scottish rival serving for the match.

“My job is to forget about what’s happened in the past and focus on that match,” Murray said. “I need to come up with the best game plan possible to win against him.

“It’s very unlikely that you’ll be comfortable physically. It will be difficult and you need to prepare yourself mentally before you go out on to the court.”

Djokovic was in exceptional form to defeat nine time champion Rafael Nadal in straight sets on Wednesday, rarely letting up after an early 4-0 lead was erased in the first set.

From 4-4, Djokovic dropped just five more games to finally get over what had been the toughest hurdle of his career and move closer to his first ever French Open title.

With the 7-5 6-3 6-1 victory, Djokovic has now won 20 sets in a row since the Rome quarter finals and will look to extend that to 23 when he takes on Murray on Friday.

“He’s playing some really good tennis and has really improved on clay,” Djokovic said about his opponent.

“He’s moving better, serving well and he’s had some of the best ground-strokes in the game for around ten years now. He’s an extremely talented player and he’ll be motivated to go past the semi-finals for the first time here.”

After seeing off Nadal, everyone is waiting to crown Djokovic as the new French Open king, priced at 1/6 with Betway.

However, Andy Murray (4/1) has shown promise with greater aggression and will be hoping to put his recent form against Djokovic behind him and continue his 15 match unbeaten run on clay.
