Novak Djokovic vs Bernard Tomic | Friday 3 July, 2015 | Wimbledon | 13.00

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic takes on Bernard Tomic in the third round of the Wimbledon Grand Slam on Friday.

This will mark their first meeting in almost three years with Djokovic remaining undefeated in the head to head series with a 3-0 record.

The Serb won his 650th tour-level match on Wednesday afternoon when he defeated Jarkko Nieminen in straight sets to advance to the third round at the Championships. He defeated the Finnish player 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 on Centre Court.

“I think it was a very solid performance.” Djokovic said after the match.

“I’ve done just enough to win in straight sets. He started off very well, very aggressive, [with] winners in the first couple games. I managed to stay calm and believed that I could come back. That’s what I’ve done.”

Meanwhile, Tomic overrode a difficult match against Pierre-Hugues Herbert to win the game in straight sets and progress into the third round.

Tomic has been in brilliant form over the past few months but it would be considered a massive upset if he manages to get the better of Djokovic on grass.

“He’s No. 1 and he’s obviously there for a reason,” Tomic said.

“What a player he is, but, you know, at my level, if I’m playing good on the day, I can beat him.”

The Australian thumped his chest in relief after qualifier Herbert’s backhand sailed long on match point as temperatures rose towards 35C. He admits that London’s mid-summer heat was having an adverse effect.

“It was tough, so I had to slow things down. I had to catch my breath,” he said.

“It was not easy, that situation got me in the second. I was feeling bad. I haven’t been sleeping well here. It’s just too hot.”

Seeded 27th, Tomic’s signature court-craft saw him soak up 21 aces and 50 winners from Herbert. However, he compensated with nine aces, 37 winners and 12 unforced errors in a remarkably clean display.

Having been defeated by Djokovic at the Wimbledon 2011 quarter-finals, the Australian will clearly fancy his chances of causing an upset in Friday’s clash.
