Tennis world number 1 Novak Djokovic faces reigning US Open champion Marin Cilic in the ATP tennis finals in London on Monday evening.

This will be the eleventh time the pair have met with Djokovic having won every single of their previous encounters.

Novak Djokovic picked up an impressive six titles this season, losing only 8 of his 65 matches. Although he enters the contest as the world’s number one seed he faces some tough competition in London this week with the globe’s top 8 players looking to take him on.

“It’s the last tournament of the season and only the best eight players in the world play here,” said Djokovic ahead of the competition. “It’s a unique format, a round robin, that we don’t have on the Tour at all.

“It’s the crowning achievement for all players here and they all want to finish in the best possible way. That’s why every match that you play in the group is like playing in the semi-finals or final of a Grand Slam.”

The world number 1 faces Marin Cilic who secured his place in the ATP World Tour Finals with an impressive 54-18 record for the year, claiming four titles including the US Open along the way. Cilic’s season concluded in Moscow where he beat Roberto Bautista Agut in straight sets to claim the Krelin Cup and his fourth title of the season.

“It’s a huge pleasure for me to be here in London,” he said this week. “After a whole season [it’s incredible] to be in the Top 8 to play this amazing event. In the past I was close to making it, but I have never experienced it. It’s an amazing feeling so far.”

Djokovic will be hoping to continue his unbeaten record against the Croat in tonight’s game to help him continue to the semi-final.

In their entire head-to-head history, Cilic has only ever won five sets against Djokovic but the 26-year-old has had a strong season and looks on form in London. During their last meeting at Wimbledon he was able to hold on for five sets against his Serbian opponent, although an indoor court might be an entirely different story.
