Novak Djokovic vs Rafael Nadal | Wednesday 3 June, 2015 | Roland Garros | 15.00

In a quarter-final draw that feels more like it should be the final, world No.1 Novak Djokovic takes on French Open favourite Rafael Nadal for a spot in the final four at Roland Garros.

Djokovic will attempt to defeat nine-time champion Nadal for the first time in his seventh attempt at Roland Garros when they meet on Wednesday.

The French Open is the only Grand Slam title missing from Djokovic’ belt, raising the stakes on this clash, while Nadal looks to cement his name in the record books as the greatest clay-court player of all time. Although the Serb has beaten his Spanish rival on clay on previous occasions, he has yet to do so in Paris.

Djokovic is in prime form on clay, winning all 14 of his matches on the surface this year and has easily earned his No.1 ranking in the world at the moment.

Richard Gasquet, who fell to Djokovic 6-1, 6-2, 6-3 in the fourth round, commented:

“He is very, very tough to play. It’s tennis made perfect, he plays perfectly on both sides, you know there is never a moment when you will be able to step into the court.

“It’s like ping pong,” he added. “The ball always comes back.”

Djokovic seems quietly confident ahead of the clash, stating of his recent form, “I could not ask for a better lead-up to that match.”

However, the Serb is aware of the threat posed by the best clay-court player in the world, adding, “Playing him here and playing him in any other tournament in the world is completely different.”

Nadal is looking similarly impressive this year and his dominance at the Roland Garros over the last decade makes him a formidable opponent. The Spaniard won’t be underestimating Djokovic on Wednesday, however, commenting, “This will be the toughest quarterfinal of my career.

“The winner of the match will not be Roland Garros champion. He will be a semi-finalist and that makes a big difference.

“Novak is probably the favourite here but I am here to fight.”

Many feel that this match will be the one to decide the champion. Whoever succeeds in the pairing will surely overpower Andy Murray in the semi-finals and continue on to wipe out either Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Stanislas Wawrinka in the final.
