Chelsea fancy their chances as they head to Paris on Tuesday to face a severely depleted PSG who suffered four injured players against Caen on Saturday.
The Champions League final 16 clash promises a sizzling atmosphere despite the chilling temperatures. With Laurent Blanc facing something of an injury crisis defender Thiago Silva has called for PSG fans to stir up a menacing atmosphere at the Parc des Princes in an attempt to get revenge over the visiting Chelsea side.
The quarter finals of last year’s Champions League saw PSG take on the Blues at Stamford Bridge, with a late goal from Demba Ba knocking the visitors out of the competition on away goals.
PSG’s 2-2 home draw with Caen on Saturday was costly in a Ligue 1 title race that’s extremely close at the top, while losing four men from this week’s squad could prove fatal to their chances in the Champions League.
Yohan Cabye, Marquinhos, Blaise Matuidi, Serge Aurier and Lucas Moura all incurred injuries at the weekend, forcing Blanc’s men to finish the game with just nine men.
PSG captain Silva commented, “It was a really bizarre game. I really can’t understand what happened. We were playing really well and then we suffered those injuries four for us [Matuidi is thought to be fit for the Champions League clash] and two from Caen.
“We need to stay positive and think about Tuesday. We have a very important home match against Chelsea.
“We need all our supporters behind us. It will be very difficult for us and I hope our supporters will get behind the team because we will need them for this crucial match. We are a lot stronger when we have our supporters pushing us on.”
Chelsea are well rested ahead of the trip having been knocked out of the FA Cup by Bradford City in January and so missing out on the weekend’s games. PSG currently have an impressive 32 game unbeaten home record in Europe but if any side can end that it will be Chelsea.
Jose Mourinho’s men continue to impress at the top of the league and are confident of their chances at the Parc de Princes, especially with the return of Diego Costa after a three match ban.
