Emma Raducanu To Start Training For AO

Elizabeth Wagner - 02 Dec 2021

Emma Raducanu has revealed that she’s about to start training with new coach Torben Beltz for next year’s Australian Open.

The British youngster will make her debut appearance in Melbourne in January.

Raducanu recently revealed her schedule for the coming weeks after an appearance at London’s Royal Albert Hall, where she played in an exhibition match. She confirmed that she had already started doing trials with her new coach and that she’s been putting four to five hours into daily fitness training.

Happy To Work With Beltz

Raducanu revealed in early November that Torben Beltz, former long-time coach to Angelique Kerber, had signed up to help her train as she prepares for her first full season.

The Brit, who completed a fairy-tale run at this year’s US Open, said she regards working with such an experienced coach to be an enormous privilege. Speaking after her three-set loss to Wang Xinyu at the Ladies Linz in Austria, Raducanu spoke of being excited about the work that now lies ahead of her.

Raducanu has been searching for a full-time coach ever since she split with Andrew Richardson after her US Open victory. The reason she gave for the split was that Richardson did not have the experience necessary to help her perform at the sport’s highest levels.

Beltz, by contrast, is an experienced and well-known figure on the women’s tour. He achieved great success coaching Kerber on route to three Grand Slam titles and an Olympic silver medal. Beltz also spent three years working with Croatian Donna Vekic.

On Hamilton & Improvement

Raducanu appeared in an upbeat mood after playing for the first time back home since her triumph at Flushing Meadows in September.

After beating practice partner Elena-Gabriela Ruse at the exhibition match in London, Raducanu discussed her hopes, her excitement about the future, and also why she regards F1 star Lewis Hamilton as her guide and mentor.

From Bromley, Raducanu revealed that the plan is to just continue to go about her business while taking the same journeys (by train) that she used to enjoy doing.

She also spoke about how Lewis Hamilton has been mentoring her ever since she met him at the Met Gala in New York. She described Hamilton as an inspiration, good role model, and “really cool” guy.

But while Raducanu says she’s still the same person she’s always been, she also says she believes she has many more improvements to make – and especially so during the off-season.
